Town plays host to fundraising football tournament

Up to 16 adult teams will be battling against each other at Leighton Town Football Club on Sunday 18 February, in order to raise money for national homelessness charity Shelter.

The six-a-side football tournament, which kicks off at 1pm, has been organised by two Midsummer Housing Association employees, Dawn Irvine and Gina McLean, in order to raise money to help the homeless and badly housed people in Britain. They are also raising funds to travel to India in April so they can help build houses for those that lost their homes in the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami.

Working for Midsummer, who manages houses in and around Leighton Buzzard, the pair have attracted lots of national housing-related companies to enter the tournament, including Rok, Connaught Partnerships Ltd, Aldwyck Housing Association, PRP Architects and Davis Langdon, as well as a Midsummer team. They have also welcomed teams of individuals, some of who have played for Leighton Town in years gone by.

Teams have paid £50 each to enter, but Dawn and Gina are also encouraging lots more fundraising on the day with events like Soccer AM’s ‘Ten Yard Bucket Challenge’, and face painting for the children. They welcome everyone from the town to come along and add their support.

Trophies, donated by Leighton Buzzard Observer, will be awarded by Leighton Town First Team manager, Keith Scott, for the winners, runners-up and top goal scorer at the end of the tournament.
