New homes for disused garage site in Newport Pagnell

Work on seven new affordable Midsummer homes started at a disused garage site in Whitethorns, Newport Pagnell, in January 2008, when Councillor Irene Henderson ?broke the ground? to officially start proceedings.

The former Milton Keynes Council site, which is centred in the middle of a well-established housing estate, was previously subject to vandalism and anti-social behaviour, creating an eyesore and causing regular disturbances for the local residents. Midsummer Housing Association, together with builders, Fernbrook, will be transforming the brownfield land with four two-bedroom bungalows and three two- and three-bedroom houses, in order to create new homes for local couples, families and elderly persons.

The £725,000 development, which is being built with £211,500 Social Housing Grant, will provide four homes for affordable rent and three for New Build HomeBuy (formerly known as shared ownership). They will be of the highest environmental standards, with an EcoHomes rating of Excellent and constructed with Modern Methods of Construction.

Cllr Henderson, who is the Portfolio Holder for Housing at Milton Keynes Council, as well as the local councillor for Newport Pagnell South, was very pleased to be part of the proceedings.

"I am delighted to see this development come to fruition, especially as there are so few opportunities to provide extra housing for the local people of Newport Pagnell," she said.

"It is also pleasing to note that Midsummer have carried out detailed consultation with the residents in this highly-established area. As a result I, certainly, have only received positive comments about the development."

Lesley Pollock, who is a Board member at Midsummer and also Chair of Midsummer's Development Committee, was also very enthusiastic about the scheme.

"Being able to transform such a nuisance area into affordable homes for people that really need them will make such a difference to this community. Midsummer is delighted to have had the opportunity to work with Milton Keynes Council to make it happen," said Lesley.

The development is due to be completed late summer 2008.
