Midsummer staff go to India to build houses for homeless

Dawn Irvine, Communications Manager and Gina McLean, Senior Development Officer at Midsummer, are travelling to India in April 2007, where they will be working with charities Shelter and Habit for Humanity to build simple but decent houses for those in desperate need.

As part of the challenge, they need to raise £6,000 before they go, and nearly half of the money they raise will be used to support Shelter’s work with homeless and badly housed families in the UK.

Read on to keep updated with their progress…

We’ve been so busy raising money the first couple of months of this year that we haven’t had time to pen this update! But now, in the beginning of March, it is with a slight feeling of euphoria that I can say that we’ve not only reached our £6,000 target, but we have in fact SMASHED it! We’re well on the way to raising over £7,000 now – with all of the extra money raised being donated directly to the work that Shelter does in the UK.

So, how have we raised this money? Well, a big thank you goes to the following companies for their more than generous corporate contributions: Perrin’s Solicitors, PDD Surveyors, Mears and Spire Homes. But we also have to pay a special thank you to Bob Collins and everyone at Aldwyck Housing Association, who contributed over £100 to our fund with individual donations…

The fun, however, has been in the doing. We’ve held three more poker tournaments, and converted a few ‘virgins’ to the game in the process. And at the beginning of February we hosted a karaoke party at Leighton Town Football Club, raising just over £400, but unfortunately discovering no raw talent from which we can make our millions!

The middle of February was a blur of footballs, coloured kits and knackered looking contractors, when we held a six-a-side football tournament for 16 teams at Leighton Town FC. The Midsummer team were disappointed to be knocked out in the group stages, but to their credit they were only beaten by the winners – something they would be only too quick to tell you themselves! Great performances were given by PRP Architects and Robert Martell & Partners, but they couldn’t match the skills of the winning team of independents. We raised over £800 in total and thanks go to the Leighton Buzzard Observer, who sponsored all the trophies, and Leighton Town Football Club, who lent all their facilities free of charge.

It’s now less than two months until we have to stop fundraising and start digging…!
