Midsummer staff go to India to build houses for homeless

Dawn Irvine, Communications Manager and Gina McLean, Senior Development Officer at Midsummer, are travelling to India in April 2007, where they will be working with charities Shelter and Habit for Humanity to build simple but decent houses for those in desperate need.

As part of the challenge, they need to raise £6,000 before they go, and nearly half of the money they raise will be used to support Shelter’s work with homeless and badly housed families in the UK.

Read on to keep updated with their progress…

Happy New Year to everyone from Dawn and Gina. December was yet another whirlwind month. The defining moment for both of us was going to a 40 th anniversary screening of Cathy Come Home. After seeing this and recognising that anyone facing homelessness still has to climb mountains to get help has strengthened our resolve even further.

The fundraising push moves along apace. We completed our sponsored silence in early December, amazingly Dawn only spoke so that she could boost our coffers by uttering the immortal lines ‘Dave you’re wonderful’ to our Deputy Chief Executive, who willingly stumped up £10 extra to hear it.

The Midsummer Christmas Quiz proved to be popular with extra money being raised by auctioning off Midsummer’s star brainiac Claire ‘Bloodhound’ Hounsham, who has a nose for facts and helped the ‘Fully Developed’ team win the quiz.

Our deadline for raising the majority of our target is looming large and we have plenty of events planned to help us get there. We don’t know what’s most exciting; the Karoake Party planned for early February, the Football Tournament planned for mid February or the ongoing Poker Tournaments; the grand final of which will be at the end of March.

It’s not just the big events that are helping us to boost our funds either, friends and colleagues have very generously emptied their piggies and their pockets and given us their small change which is filling up our whisky bottle nicely.

We also have raffle tickets available now with host of lovely, lovely prizes, don’t miss out!

Gina and Dawn
